Dr. Jena Questen
👋 Hey animal lovers! Thanks for watching! 😊 Join us as we share a peaceful glimpse into our ranch life, featuring our beloved horses in the paddock. This animal video captures some serene moments of horse care and our wonderful rescue farm animals. We hope these horse videos bring a smile to your face!
Yesterday was a very eventful day with the horses and here around the ranch. We decided to have a ‘fire drill’ by catching all of the horses and containing them for the afternoon to practice being able to do just that. It also happened to work out that it was the same day we received a load of hay, and we got our neighbor to bring his skid steer machine to help clean up our paddock and remove our growing poop mountain.
The day started by having breakfast with my older daughter and her friend, which was a wonderful surprise. Then, I went to Big R and bought some new halters because many of ours are getting old and worn. Then we started the live stream, and the activity of catching all 9 animals and getting them corralled up safely. It didn’t actually take us that long to get everyone haltered and caught, which was great. And most all of the horses remained calm and relaxed throughout the entire process. We had the most fun with the fillies and Sugar who put in the sand round pen with the horse trailer attached, and the girls spent the next 4 hours practicing loading themselves up into the horse trailer on their own. While Sugar just spent the whole time standing in the trailer, happily munching hay, and showing the girls there is nothing to be concerned about inside this trailer. It was a lot of fun, although, it was also a lot of exhausting work just making sure everyone had enough food, water, and the occasional treat to ensure everyone stayed calm and no one got worked up, scared, or too aggressive with anyone else during this unusual time, while the skid steer zoomed back and forth cleaning up the manure and bringing in new wood chips to keep the area clean and comfortable for the horses.
I am so grateful we were able to finally get this done. I am so grateful that catching all of the horses was easier than we actually thought. I am grateful it went well and the animals tolerated their potentially stressful afternoon without much fuss. I am grateful I was able to afford to buy new halters, and pay the neighbor for his excellent work. I am grateful for the potentially stressful experience, which actually turned out to be quite fun and enjoyable, especially working with the little silly fillies who were quite entertaining and behaved exceptionally well throughout the entire day and made us smile all day. I am grateful for the gentle rain that fell all day, not only making the day more beautiful, but also nourishing the earth. I am grateful for all the herds of elk which came and went throughout the day, causing us to stop and marvel at them again and again.
This is going to be a very full week, with the high school play being this week which I always volunteer to help with, a full day of work, and my Derby party at the end of the week. Remember, it is not about horse racing itself, but about what it takes to care for horses who have survived the horse racing industry. I hope you will join us for what is bound to be the most fun Saturday afternoon in Evergreen of the spring. Reserve your space on the website resqranch.org.
