Dr. Jena Questen
Do you ever have a day off where do you so much that you need a break? That's me this morning!
I felt so guilty all day about taking Saturday off, that I pushed myself twice as hard as usual all day. No fooling around with horses. No going out. No housecleaning despite the dust bunnies skimming around taunting me. Just study, read, focus, and think about how to create a tribe of people who will join me in changing how the world trains and heals animals - with love, not force.
I am grateful I have found my purpose. I am grateful I am driven. I am grateful I have the knowledge, power, and ability to think, read, study and try to make each day better than the last. I am grateful for the sunshine, and the beautiful fall weather. I am grateful these 9 beautiful animals in my care are happy, healthy, and I can take pride in how they are cared for, knowing they want for nothing, and that fills my cup.
The best part of my day yesterday was two fold. For one, Cesar got his second set of shoes ever in his life yesterday. His episode with founder ( a painful foot condition) is on the mend with the skill of our new farrier. Also, he was perfectly behaved although it was only his second time getting shoes on. It takes a lot for a horse to stand there for an hour and let a stranger pound on and handle each one of your feet while standing on 3 legs! Then, for two, while I was waiting for the farrier to arrive, I stood by the front gate and had it open for him, when that little stinker Sugar snuck up behind me and zipped through the gate right while I was standing there! I tried to grab her, but I had nothing to hold on to and she trotted across the road, right through the neighbors field and found some long grass to park herself in. Never mind the neighbors were in their field, dirt biking and biking and having a great afternoon with their dogs and kids running all around. Yikes! I apologized profusely, so embarrassed!
I ran back to the barn, got a halter, lead rope, and a bucket of grain just to stack the odds in my favor I could catch her. But I needn't have worried, because as soon as she noticed me coming back, she picked her head up, so I called for her, and she just bee-lined right through all that chaos one more time, the motorcycles and the yipping, circling dogs, and trotted right through the middle of all that and came right to me. It was the very best part of my day!
So if you want a bond like that with YOUR horse, #positivereinforcement #animaltraining is the proven way!
So how can you get started? Well, first al all start with this pre-training, or "Pre-Flight" as I like to call it, checklist, to ensure you don't take an 'unexpected' flight! Get yours for FREE, here https://www.resqranch.org/7steppreflightchecklist-email
Then the next step is my step by step flow chart that takes you through from stepping into the barn, to riding off all saddled and bridled, the R+ way. If you this put YES into the comments below!
And if you are already doing positive reinforcement, and could use a new clicker, consider supporting us and getting your two pack of clickers here https://m0ztfs-p7.myshopify.com/products/hoaooo-pet-training-clicker-with-wrist-strap-dog-training-clickers-new-black-blue
If you are local, love horses, and want something really fun and different to do the day after Halloween, then please join us for our Fall Winter Hay Fundraiser and Breeder's Cup Party at the Arapahoe Park Racetrack in Aurora, Colorado! Here is the link to sign up for that event https://www.resqranch.org/breeders-cup-signup
It's sure to be a really fun time, I am so excited for it!
Today I wish for you to have the most fun, relaxing day of your entire life. Imagine for a moment what that would look like for you. Spending time with your pets, with your family, getting some time in nature? Taking a deep breath and just visualizing for a moment, how you will feel when you go to sleep tonight, how will you feel about how you spent your time today. We are all given the exact same amount of time, aren't we lucky for being to choose how we want to utilize it?
So I encourage you to be kind to yourself, because YOU are going GREAT, and get out there and make it the best darn day of your life. Cheers!
